A native of Argentina, with a 6-yr “Licenciatura” from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. V. Monica Bricelj is an internationally recognized scientist with an interdisciplinary background and expertise in shellfish biology, ecophysiology and aquaculture, management and control of shellfish biotoxins and seafood safety. She has also conducted extensive research on the impacts of harmful algal blooms on commercially important bivalve molluscs, the accumulation of algal toxins in shellfish, the main vectors of algal toxins to humans, and their fate in marine food webs – a public health concern.

She was an Associate and Senior Research Officer at the Institute of Marine Biosciences of the National Research Council, Halifax, Canada, Adjunct Professor in the Biology and Oceanography Departments at Dalhousie University, Canada (1996 to 2008), and Research Professor at the Institute (now Department) of Marine and Coastal Sciences, Rutgers University, NJ, USA (2008 to 2016). She is sole Director of the consulting firm TechMar Research Inc., based in Brooklyn, NY, and has undertaken consulting work in the US, Canada, UAE, and the PRC, including Hong Kong.

She was a visiting CNRS (Centre National de Recherche Scientifique) scientist at the Laboratoire des Sciences de L’Environnement Marin/Institut Européen de la Mer (LEMAR/IUEM), Brittany, France in 2007, and was awarded a Fulbright COMEXUS scholarship to conduct research and teach at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC), Ensenada, Mexico in 2015/2016.

Dr. Bricelj was an Assistant Professor at Long Island University, NY, an Assistant and tenured Associate Professor at the Marine Sciences Research Center (now School of Marine and Atmospheric Science), State University of New York at Stony Brook (now Stony Brook University), NY, where she received her M.Sc. in Marine Environmental Sciences and Ph.D. in Coastal Oceanography.

In the last 30 years, Dr. Bricelj has authored/co-authored ~100+ peer-reviewed publications, including review articles, textbook chapters, and technical reports in her fields of expertise. A recipient of awards of excellence and outstanding achievement for work published in Nature in 2005, she has lectured worldwide and served as a panelist on numerous boards and government agencies, as advisor for the shellfish industry and consultant for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and New York Sea Grant Institute.
